So we are not like to meet there...." English physiologist Stephen Hales (1677-1761) invented many mechanical devices including artificial ventilators. The instruments he created to collect gases were the forerunners of the pneumatic trough, which is still used today for the same purpose. His "Vegetable Staticks" (1727), a report on his experiments on plant respiration and transpiration, is considered the first work of plant physiology. In 1733, he published "Hemostaticks" which described the pressure and velocity of blood in the veins; he was the first to quantitatively measure blood pressure.
